History of Who We Are
There are many reasons that someone might work in long term care, or even make a career in geriatric nursing, but for Grace Glasser, health-care for aging adults just found her. When Grace graduated from Kent State University’s nursing program, entry-level positions in hospitals were rare, so Grace took a position in a nursing home. There was no turning back from there; Grace found that caring for the “greatest generation” was her passion.
In a few short years Grace quickly took on roles commensurate with her passion and abilities. She worked first as a night supervisor and then as the Director of Nursing in large urban nursing homes. She went on to work as a consultant for nursing homes with regulatory and legal difficulties, creating and implementing successful corrective plans of action. She continued to broaden her knowledge by becoming a licensed nursing home administrator (LNHA) and a Certified Professional in healthcare Quality (CPHQ). As time went on, law firms in 31 states contacted Grace for her opinion and expert testimony in long term care litigation. For over 20 years, she served as a trusted and sought-after nursing home and assisted living testifying expert.
When a local group of investors planned construction of a new 99 unit Assisted Living in a neighboring community, they hired Grace to consult on the design, specifications and operational systems. The facility was very successful, but Grace was not satisfied with the quality of care and customer service typically found in large facilities such as this.
At a time when the public was not yet well-acquainted with the term “Assisted Living”, Grace decided it was time to build her facility, and to create a model focused on a smaller number of residents with a higher caregiver ratio in a well-designed residence. In 1999, with the help of a local builder, Haven Home Assisted Living of Mentor in Northeastern Ohio was opened for operation and continues to operate successfully today under new ownership. After experiencing the success and positive feedback in this endeavor, Grace partnered with another nurse to build two more similar facilities in Ohio.
Since developing and operating Haven Home, Grace has also managed Assisted Living facilities for others and was asked to consult on the design for another building that would be Independent Senior Living apartments; this facility is still serving seniors today.
Through the years, Grace has obtained many prestigious certifications relevant to the senior health-care industry. Along the way Dale Glasser has been a willing and enthusiastic partner in Grace’s vision and pursuit of a better model for assisted living for seniors, contributing heavily to the management of facility structure, business planning and employee relations.
In 2008, the Glasser family focused on relocating to Hendersonville, Tennessee and we were thrilled when three of our four grown children, (and all of our grandchildren!) relocated there with us. After moving to Hendersonville, our son Matthew added a dietary manager certification (CDM) to his qualifications and, along with Dale, became a Licensed Assisted Living Administrator in Tennessee. He has gained experience in both Nursing Homes and Assisted Living facilities, and his scope and expertise have been furthered by his experience of “camp boss” on offshore oil rigs and employment as a field safety officer for an oil company.
As the recession was ending, The Glasser family saw a need for the a Haven Home type Assisted Living in Hendersonville. The people of our community did not have the option of a locally owned and professionally operated small assisted living. In late 2015 Dale and Grace began the journey of design and development of the 16 bed model of assisted living in Hendersonville, bringing together deep knowledge and experience along with a passion for hospitality to establish a home in our community that is owned and operated by local people with an approach to caring that is based on joyfully living each day to its maximum potential in a family environment. The result is Maple Cottage.
